EVANSTON, Ill. (Associated Press)
Smokers now need to be 21 to buy cigarettes in Evanston.
WBBM TV reports that the ordinance in the northern Chicago suburb took effect Saturday. It’s the first community in Illinois to raise the age from 18.
Dr. Tim Sanborn is a member of Evanston’s Health Advisory Council. The cardiologist says 90 percent of smokers start before age 21. He says people who don’t develop the habit as teens are less likely to start as adults.
Authorities know they won’t abolish teen smoking. But city health official Carl Caneva says forcing them to leave the community to get their fix adds an obstacle.
Nationally about 40 municipalities have raised the age to buy tobacco to 21. Studies show about 10 percent of Chicago teens smoke lowest ever.
