What Brands of Electronic Cigarettes Have Exploding E Cigarette Batteries?

Some people who are considering e cigarettes as an alternative to smoking tobacco have been distracted by sensational news stories involving exploding e cigarettes. It began with a story about an e cigarette that exploded in a man’s face.

When I first heard about this particular story, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Okay, I should be ashamed of myself, but being a former Cartoon Network executive I just couldn’t get the Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd exploding cigar prank out of my head.

Now that I’m a respectable editor for Cloud Nine, as well as a supporter of electronic cigarettes, I put on a straight face and directed our team to do some serious fact finding.

Based on the evidence we uncovered, the electronic cigarette that reportedly exploded in a Florida man’s mouth was actually a cigar (how ironic) one that he built himself, or modified, using parts purchased online.

Despite the media frenzy that followed the incident, subsequent reports have surfaced confirming that the device was indeed a home made mod a term used in vaping circles for a modified electronic cigarette.

Why do people modify a good thing? One can only speculate, but I suspect that the user wanted to create a smoking device that would provide more battery life or higher performance capabilities than those on the legal market.

Unfortunately, life is not a cartoon and the inventor wound up with the lethal personification of Bugs Bunny’s exploding cigar.

Although what happen was a tragedy that should not be taken lightly, it should also not be viewed as a reflection of the entire electronic cigarette industry.

Recent Stories of Exploding E Cigarettes

Commercial e cigarettes are considered safe if used normally. Follow the directions on how to use your e cigarette and don’t substitute the parts that come with your brand’s kit! Don’t buy cheap e cigarettes from relatively unknown ecig companies either!

E cigarette companies who have SGS certifications on their products have all met or surpassed the necessary stress tests on their batteries to ensure that they are safe to use for their intended purpose.

Dan Recio, co founder of #1 e cigarette manufacturer V2 Cigs, said in a statement.

“We took action against the possibility of electronic issues from the very beginning, with safeguards integrated into our batteries like automatic shutoff and smart chargers that prevent overcharging. We properly age all batteries before shipment and retest mAh to ensure the highest standards.”

Electronic cigarettes incorporate a micro chip that prevents both over discharge rates and under voltage conditions of the battery. Safety chargers prevent overcharging and subsequent thermal runaway.

The greatest danger, according to reputable e cigarette forums lies with modified e cigarettes, such as putting two lithium ion batteries together in a metal tube. This dangerous device, known as “pipe” or “tube” mod is counterfeit and definitely not available within the legal commercial e cigarette market.

Equally dangerous, is charging an e cigarette with a USB charger that was not part of your e cigarette kit’s original packaging. This includes substituting different car charger batteries. Lithium ion batteries that are cheaply manufactured and do not contain a safety chip can overheat when then are left on the charger too long, or are being charged with a USB charger not compliant with that battery.

Don’t Mess With a Good Thing

2.5 million Americans used electronic cigarettes in 2011 according to a federal report and E Cigarette sales are projected to double to $1.7 billion in 2013.

It’s good to know that the most reputable electronic cigarette companies test their product batteries and ingredients for safety and their instruction manuals include warnings. Check out this article on Green Smoke’s Quality Control and you’ll see what I mean.

These are the herbal cigarettes they smoke on mad men: gothamist

It's time to clear up the confusion over e-cigarettes – itv news

At the Mad Men Q&A at the Paley Center earlier this week, the cast discussed smoking on the show, noting they smoke herbal cigarettes made of “rose petals, marshmallow… no nicotine or tar.” It’s always been known they aren’t puffing down real Lucky Strikes, but what is their herbal brand of choice? There are a few options out there but we were told by the folks at Mad Men today that their brand is Ecstacy.

There’s actually no mention of marshmallows in Ecstacy herbal cigs, although the Honeyrose brand does offer herbal smokes with “marshmallow leaves and rose petals.” And while Ecstacy touts their “all natural herbs that are 100% tobacco and nicotine free” as a “terrific substitute for tobacco and great for anyone looking to quit smoking,” keep in mind that smoking anything is worse for you than smoking nothing (end PSA). From the Q&A on Tuesday

Brian Williams What is in the cigarettes you guys love smoking?
John Slattery &#133 fake cigarettes&#133 those are herbal cigarettes, who knows what’s in them&#133 rose petals, marshmallows, I don’t know.
January Jones I found a piece of plastic in one&#133
JS (pointing) Plastic, very healthy.
BW But you inhale a lot!
John Hamm Yeah, there’s just no nicotine or tar&#133 which makes them VERY healthy.
BW Because you guys probably inhale cumulatively 80,000 of them each!
JH Yeah, we should really own stock in the company.

Last year Jon Hamm discussed his character’s smoking habit in an interview, claiming that he smoked 74 cigarettes while shooting the pilot alone “You have to remember, though, that shooting a scene is not shooting one take of a scene. It’s four or five setups, and three or four takes on each setup. So every time you see me light a cigarette, I do it five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 times.” As a result, he said, “You can hear from my voice that it’s a debilitating endeavour. We’re going for verisimilitude, though. People did smoke. And it creates a mood on the show.” At Tuesday’s Q&A, the cast mentioned that the cigarettes are burned down for them to the exact point they need to be at when shooting a scene so at least they aren’t frantically huffing a new one down each take.

To look further into whether there can be a lesser of two evils here, we plan on sticking Chris Robbins into a room with a carton of these and a direct line to the FDA until he comes out with a long form article on herbal cigarettes, la his informative e cigarettes piece.
